What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Chester & Wrexham is a structured & science-based approach to overcoming problems. At the outset of therapy we define problems in specific terms; identify the factors maintaining the problems; and then establish specific, measurable, time-limited treatment goals. All subsequent treatment sessions are focused upon helping you to work towards your goals.

CBT in Chester & Wrexham focuses particularly upon problems in the "here and now", and the factors that are stopping the problem from going away. Often we find that people have developed "stuck" patterns of responding to situations, and we help people to overcome their difficulties by learning and practising new ways of thinking and behaving in these situations.

What happens in treatment?

In the first place we will offer you a one hour initial assessment appointment. The purpose of the assessment appointment is to discuss your current difficulties and establish whether or not CBT in Chester & Wrexham is likely to be the most beneficial treatment for your problems. By the end of the assessment appointment we will recommend a specific treatment programme tailored to your individual needs, and we will provide you with an estimate regarding the amount of sessions likely to be required.

Subsequent treatment sessions are individually tailored to your needs, and so the frequency and length of sessions can vary. However sessions typically are one hour in length and occur on approximately a weekly basis.

At sessions of CBT in Chester & Wrexham you will learn new ways of thinking and behaving in order to overcome your problems. Then between sessions you will practise the skills you have learned. In many ways the therapist acts like a training coach. Hence one of the great things about cognitive behavioural therapy in Chester & Wrexham is that the improvements you make will be down to your own hard work. In fact studies have shown that once people learn the necessary skills to overcome a specific problem, they are often able to apply those skills to other things that haven’t even been targeted during treatment!
